League of Legends by Riot Games has hit the $1 Billion in revenue mark as the game reaches 27 million active users.
Riot Games’ League of Legends launched back in 2009 and quickly became one of the most popular games around.
Despite the fact that the game is free, revenue is made from the in-game purchases that users make in order to enhance the game. The company has now suggested that by the end of the year, they would have reached the $1 Billion mark.
Another reason for the games success is that Riot holds World Championship Tournaments every year that offer seats for $15-$50.
Analysts believe another reason for the success is that Riot placed overall experience first and then finance, in order to help push the user base past 27 million.
The reward strategy in the game is also believed to help drive up player satisfaction and even though the in-game purchases are small, players are more likely to use them when they are engaged in the game.
The gaming industry is huge and continues to grow as more popular games are transitioned over to apps, and as more developers work on making their games free for users to play.
